Origin & Supply

The most important producer of aquamarine is Brazil, although Pakistan produces outstanding crystals. Other locations include Australia, China, Madagascar and the US.

Optical Features

Aquamarines are from the beryl group of minerals, which include emeralds and heliodor. They grow within the earth into transparent crystals, which are distinctive for often being flawless (containing no inclusions).

Aquamarine measures 7 – 8 on the Mohs scale, so it’s durable and good for using in jewellery.

Conclusion

Aquamarine gems range in colour from light blue to greenish blue, with the more intense blues being the most valuable. Their stunning blue colour comes from trace elements of iron, which form in the crystal structure. Strong saturated blues are the most desirable.
